List of places owned by the St. Marienstern Monastery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aerial view of the former founding place Spittel, which has belonged to the city of Kamenz since 1903 . In the middle the Catholic Church of St. Maria Magdalena, to the right of it the former hospital, from the middle left to the top right flows the Black Elster , which formed the border between the Spittel, which remained Catholic after the Reformation, and the predominantly Protestant town of Kamenz (see also picture notes).

The list includes places and parts of localities that were owned by the Cistercian Abbey of St. Marienstern . The monastery was in 1248 in the then to Bohemia belonging Oberlausitz founded. In contrast to the communities in the area, most of the localities remained Catholic even after the Reformation . From around 1560, the places were subordinate to an administrator of the Meißen diocese based in Bautzen at St. Petri Cathedral . The first administrator of Upper and Lower Lusatia was Johann Leisentrit . In the Peace of Prague in 1635, the monastery towns and Upper Lusatia became part of the Electorate of Saxony . Due to a separate appendix to the Prague Peace Treaty, the traditional recession , in which the transfer of Upper and Lower Lusatia on the Saxons was regulated in 1636, the remaining religious foundations were not allowed to be secularized and the associated parishes could remain Catholic.

From 1815 onwards, due to the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna, around a seventh of the towns became Prussian and from 1821 onwards they belonged to the Archdiocese of Wroclaw due to the papal bull De salute animarum . The remainder of the Meißen diocese in Upper Lusatia in Saxony was often referred to as the Apostolic Prefecture (Upper) Lusatia and became part of the 1921 re-established diocese based in Bautzen. Today all places are in the districts of Bautzen and Görlitz in the federal state of Saxony.
