geography

Berge is located southeast of Bautzen on the road from Großpostwitz to Obergurig in the Lausitzer Bergland . The village is located on the northeast slope of the 384 m high Sonnenberg above the Spree valley . The mountains in the west are dominated by the 447.4 m high Mönchswalder Berg .

history

The discovery of an ax hammer from the Neolithic Age and a grave from the Bronze Age discovered in 1920 between Berge and Lehn indicate an early settlement of the northeast flank of the Mönchswalder Berg. The place, which consists of two settlement cores, was probably created as a Slavic spring hamlet, over which a square-like settlement of several three-sided courtyards was laid out during the colonization period.

"Bergk" was first mentioned in 1383. In 1482 the place was called "Perig". Until 1486 the village belonged to the possessions of the Eulowitz manor, then to the property of the St. Marienstern monastery . In 1936 Berge was incorporated into Großpostwitz.

In the upper part of the village there are five three-sided courtyards, including the mountain hereditary court, where the “Bergsche Fastnacht” was celebrated in winter according to old tradition. In the 20th century, new buildings were built along the road to Großpostwitz, connecting the town with the Großpostwitz station district. The only preserved half-timbered house is house no.4 from 1787.

Population and language

Kocor monument in mountains

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 145 inhabitants in the 1880s; 112 of them were Sorbs (77%) and 33 were Germans. At that time mountains lay on the southern edge of the Sorbian majority area in Upper Lusatia. The language change to German took place here mainly in the first half of the 20th century. Since then, the language has largely disappeared from everyday life.

Personalities

The Sorbian composer Korla Awgust Kocor (Karl August Katzer) was born in Berge in 1822 . A monument was erected in front of the house where he was born.
