Korla Awgust Kocor (German name Karl August Katzer ; born December 3, 1822 in Berge near Großpostwitz , † May 19, 1904 in Kittlitz ) was a Sorbian composer , conductor , music writer and organizer of Sorbian musical life .

Life

After finishing elementary school in Großpostwitz , Kocor entered the rural seminary in Bautzen in 1838 in order to receive training as a teacher. After finishing his studies in 1842 he became a teacher in Wartha . In the autumn of 1844 he met the Sorbian poet Handrij Zejler for the first time in Oppitz . Kocor founded the tradition of the Sorbian song festivals; on October 17, 1845 he was able to host the first meeting of this kind in Bautzen. Zejler's Rjana Łužica was performed there for the first time, the setting of which was done by Kocor. The encounter with Handrij Zejler should prove to be artistically very productive in the future - Kocor created settings of many of Zejler's poems, which are still very popular today. Kocor went down in music history primarily as the creator of the great oratorio cycle “Počasy” (The Seasons) based on four epic poems by Zejler. In 1852 Kocor took up the position of teacher and organist in Kittlitz , where most of his well-known works were written. He held his office until his retirement in 1888 and remained in Kittlitz afterwards.

From 1895 to 1897 Kocor worked as the chairman of the music department of the Sorbian Academy of Science " Maćica Serbska ", of which he was appointed honorary member in 1895. His successor was Jurij Pilk .
