Pilk was born the son of the Göda village gendarme and, after attending school in Bautzen, studied from 1872 to 1876 at the local rural class teachers' college . First he worked as a teacher in Guttau . In 1878/79 he came to Neukirch / Lausitz as an assistant teacher , where he also met his future wife Wilhelmine Berthold. In Neukirch / Lausitz he dealt intensively with local history and later published the two books "Neukirch am Howald in the Wars of Liberation " and "Neukirch in the 18th Century". With the first book mentioned , he received his doctorate as a historian from the University of Rostock in 1890. phil.

It is thanks to the historian Pilk that the legend of the magician Krabat was discovered (1896), as well as the discovery of a Sorbian language monument (the oath of the subjects of the Electoral Saxon Office of Senftenberg ). There are also numerous local historical researches.

As a composer, in addition to a rich song and choral work that absorbs Sorbian folk traditions, he has especially emerged with the singspiel "Smjertnica" (The Goddess of Death). The setting of the libretto , which was written by the Sorbian folk poet Jan Radyserb-Wjela , was completed in 1900, the premiere - in concert form - did not take place until 1912 in Bautzen (Upper Sorbian Budyšin ), and the first scenic performance did not take place until 1926 in Wittichenau ( Sorbian Kulow ) . The overture to Smjertnica is still one of the most frequently performed works in classical Sorbian music . Like numerous overtures in Romantic music, it is kept in the sonata main movement form and thus represents a certain anachronism . Pilk finds a very dance-like and a certain pathos romantic tone that is reminiscent of Smetana , Dvořák , but also Moniuszko .

Pilk was also an organizer of Sorbian musical life and, as such, from 1897 to 1906 chaired the musical branch of the scientific society Maćica Serbska .

After his retirement he returned to Neukirch / Lausitz and rented an apartment there in the Villa Grunewald.
