geography

The mountain hamlet is located southeast of Bautzen on a saddle between the 384.2 meter high Mehltheuerberg and the 412.4 meter high Schmoritz . The 431.9 meter high Thromberg (Lubin) rises to the southwest .

history

The forest was first mentioned in "Mehlthewer" in 1529. The Sorbian name "Lubjenc" goes back to an earlier name for the Mehltheuerberg. In 1534 the Bautzen council bought the village of "Maldeuer". The place name for a remote small settlement suggests that the settlement was founded from Pielitz . From 1590 onwards there is evidence of a forester in “Malteyer”. During the Battle of Bautzen , fierce fighting took place around the Mehltheuer Pass, in which the French troops under Marshal Oudinot took up the attack against the flank positions of the Russian General Miloradowitsch.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 49 inhabitants in the 1880s; 43 of them were Sorbs and six Germans. Since then, Sorbian has largely disappeared from everyday life.

In 1936 Mehltheuer was incorporated into Grubditz . Since 1973 Mehltheuer has been part of Jenkwitz. When Jenkwitz was incorporated into Kubschütz , Mehltheuer was reclassified to Großpostwitz in 1994.
