Kriepitz , in Upper Sorbian Krěpjecy ? / i , is a district of the town of Elstra in the Bautzen district in Saxony . Until July 1, 1950, Kriepitz was an independent municipality. Kriepitz is the only part of Elstra that belongs to the official Sorbian settlement area . Audio file / audio sample

Kriepitz is located six kilometers southeast of Kamenz and around 50 kilometers northeast of Dresden in the West Lusatian hills and mountains . Neighboring villages are Miltitz in the northeast, Jauer in the east, Ostro and Kaschwitz in the southeast, Gödlau in the south, Elstra in the west and Prietitz in the northwest. The Schwarze Elster flows to the west of Kriepitz and the Jauer Bach to the east .

Kriepitz is located on the state road 105 between Elstra and Panschwitz-Kuckau . State road 94 leads past Kriepitz to the west as a bypass.

The Rundweilerdorf Kriepitz was first mentioned in a document as Crippitz in 1419 . In 1511 the place belonged to the manor Elstra, in 1624 a manor Kriepitz without a manor is mentioned. In 1661 the village and the manor were sold to the St. Marienstern monastery . In terms of church, Kriepitz belonged to Elstra, the Roman Catholic residents of the place were parish to Ostro. In the 19th century, Kriepitz belonged to the Kamenz court district and thus became part of the newly formed Kamenz district administration in 1874 , which became the Kamenz district in 1939 . On July 1, 1950, Kriepitz was incorporated into Elstra .

From 1952 until reunification , Kriepitz belonged to the Kamenz district in the GDR district of Dresden and then to the Kamenz district . In the course of the district reform in 1996, Kriepitz became part of the new district of Kamenz , which merged on August 1, 2008 with the old district of Bautzen to form today's district of Bautzen .

Population and language

The population of the village of Kriepitz in 1777 consisted of seven possessed men , three gardeners and six house workers . In 1834 there were 119 inhabitants, this number rose to 144 by 1871. In 1890 the place had 139 inhabitants, twenty years later there were again 144 inhabitants. By 1925 the population had decreased to 132, after the end of the Second World War, Kriepitz had 182 inhabitants. In the 1925 census, 93 Evangelical Lutheran and 36 Catholic residents were registered, three people were of other denominations.

In the statistics on the Sorbian population in Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 136 in 1884, of which 38 were Sorbs (28%).
