Byzantine Empire
- September 23 : The previous Caesar Basil I murdered Emperor Michael III. just like his rival Basiliskianos and is himself elevated to emperor of the Byzantine Empire . He founded the Macedonian dynasty . His church policy is characterized by good relations with Rome. One of his first acts is the banishment of the patriarch Photios I , who fights for the independence of the Byzantine Church, and the reinstatement of his rival Ignatios I , whose claims are supported by Pope Hadrian II .
