Ecgberht I (Northumbria)
Ecgberht († 873 ) was sub-king of Northumbria from 867 to 872 . Very little is known of Northumbria from this period .
Ecgberht is mentioned for the first time when, instead of the fallen kings Ælle and Osberht , he was put on the throne by the victorious Danish Vikings as sub-king. His sphere of influence was limited to Bernicia , the region north of the Tyne. Historians assume that he only served as the puppet king and tax collector of the Great Pagan Army and that he came from one of the Northumbrian families fighting for royal dignity.
Another mention of Ecgberht in historical sources did not appear again until 872, when the chronicler Symeon of Durham reported that "the Northumbrians drove out their king Ecgberht and the Archbishop Wulfhere".
Finally, there is an account of his death in 873 and that Ricsige succeeded him.
