Castledermot ( Irish Díseart Diarmada ) is a small town in the Republic of Ireland in the south of County Kildare with 887 inhabitants (as of 2006). It is on the main N9 road between Dublin and Carlow .

history

The name Castledermot comes from a monastic settlement founded around 500 by St. Dermot. The monastery was attacked by Vikings in 841 and 867 , plundered again in 1048 and secularized in 1541 at the instigation of Henry VIII . The first known Irish Parliament met on June 18, 1264 in Castledermot.

Attractions

  • Round tower and two high crosses of the late type, which were probably not erected until the end of the 10th century. They are in the cemetery of what is now the Anglican Church. They are made of granite and represent a mixture of ornament and Bible cross.
  • The Castledermot Hogback is the only specimen of its kind in Ireland.

  • Kilkea Castle , built by Hugh de Lacy around 1180; former residence of the Duke of Leinster , now a hotel.
