- Æthelwulf succeeds his late father Egbert as King of Wessex . He is crowned in Kingston upon Thames. Æthelwulf appoints his eldest son Æthelstan as sub-king of Kent, Essex, Surrey and Sussex while ruling over the old heartland of Wessex (Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Devon).
