• 843 : The grandchildren of Charlemagne ( Ludwig the German , Karl der Kahle and Lothar I ) divide his empire in the Treaty of Verdun .
• 845 : The Vikings plunder Paris and destroy Hammaburg ( Hamburg ); Bremen then becomes the seat of the Archdiocese of Hamburg .
• 847 : Leo IV fortifies the city of Leo (the Vatican quarter ).
• 849 : Battle of Ostia .
