Franz Guntermann , full name Wilhelm Franz Guntermann , (born August 22, 1881 in Steele , † February 15, 1963 in Münster ) was a German sculptor .

Life

As the son of a worker, Franz Guntermann attended elementary school. From 1896 to 1900 he completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor with the master sculptor Peter Scharwitz in Bochum . From 1900 to 1903 he was on journeyman journeys and worked in various sculpting workshops. The last stop was in Munich , where from 1904 he also attended the arts and crafts school in preparation for attending the Academy of Fine Arts . From 1908 to 1912 he studied as a master student of Balthasar Schmitt at the Munich Art Academy. In 1912 he was appointed head of the sculpture class at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dessau . From 1914 to 1928 he taught at the crafts and arts and crafts school in Bielefeld . The artist had connections to the Wiedenbrück school . From 1928 to 1949 Guntermann headed the sculpture class at the School of Crafts and Applied Arts in Münster , today's department of design at the Münster University of Applied Sciences .

Franz Guntermann died on February 15, 1963 in Münster, but was buried in the Laurentiusfriedhof in Essen-Steele. His house at Studtstrasse 31 in Münster is now used by the Wingolfsbund and is a listed building .

Awards

Following a successful art exhibition in Berlin in 1921, Guntermann was awarded the title of professor. The large medal of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich was awarded to him four times. He also received the Steeler Citizenship Plaque of Honor.
