Clemens Max Meinolfus Hubertus Maria Stanislaus von Droste zu Hülshoff (born January 5, 1881 in Böddeken , † February 3, 1955 in Haus Stapel ) was a district administrator for the district of Höxter and an administrative lawyer.

Life

Clemens Freiherr Droste zu Hülshoff was born as the third son of the district administrator of Büren, Clemens Friedrich Freiherr Droste zu Hülshoff (1837-1919) and his wife Maria von Mallinckrodt (1846-1922) on Haus Böddeken . He belonged to the 22nd generation of his family and studied law at the University of Münster , among others . He spent his traineeship and assessor time in East Germany, among other places. During the First World War he served in France , most recently with the rank of captain . In 1925 he married Maria-Theresia Freiin von Pfetten (born September 22, 1903 in Ramspau; † April 11, 1929 in Höxter ), who died at the age of 26 after the birth of two daughters.

He died in 1955; With the death of his brother Hermann in 1959, the Stapel line of the Droste zu Hülshoff family in the male line ceased to exist. Since the main line on Hülshoff had already expired 10 years earlier, his second nephew, Mariano Freiherr von Droste zu Hülshoff, from the continuing line of Schloss Hamborn , followed as the family elder .

Working life

From 1918 to 1933 Clemens was district administrator in the Höxter district , it was his “dream job”. He was deposed by the Nazis in 1933 and demoted to the government council . From 1919 to 1920 he was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Westphalia for the Höxter constituency . He worked in the government in Cologne until 1936 , after which he was transferred to the government in Münster , with a view to managing Haus Stapel .

Management of family property

After the death of his older brother Friedrich in 1936, he took over the management of their inheritance, Haus Stapel and Haus Giesking, for his adopted child, his daughter Ermengard (married Freifrau Raitz von Frentz ) .

Other merits

Clemens von Droste zu Hülshoff was involved in the Annette von Droste Society . Together with his siblings, he kept part of the literary estate of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff , his great-aunt, in Haus Stapel. After his death, his sisters Paula and Berta made him increasingly accessible for research. At the celebration of the 100th anniversary of his death on May 24, 1948 in Meersburg, Clemens represented his family as the "elder".
