Mary Ann McSweeney

Mary Ann McSweeney (born April 27, 1962 in Santa Cruz , California ) is an American double bass player and composer who has mainly emerged in the field of jazz .

McSweeney received a classical music education; She received her first piano lessons at the age of five, and the violin at the age of eight. As a teenager, she first performed as a pianist before switching to the electric bass in junior high school , and then to the double bass shortly afterwards. When she was 16, she performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival in a big band led by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis . She studied music at California State Northridge College in Los Angeles, where she had the opportunity to take classes with Ray Brown . Later she was a student of John Clayton . Richie Beirach was an important mentor .

During the 1980s she worked in the jazz clubs of Los Angeles, but also at festivals; she was also active as a studio musician . In 1993 McSweeney moved to New York with trombonist Mike Fahn , whom she married. There she played in numerous Broadway shows, played in clubs with Lynne Arriale , Dizzy Gillespie , Donny McCaslin , Rick Margitza , Diva and Jimmy Witherspoon and also performed in Europe. She also played classical music in ensembles under the direction of Leonard Bernstein , Lalo Schifrin and John Williams . She also led her own groups, with which she presented the albums Thoughts of You (2001) and Swept Away (2002), and also appeared in her husband's bands ( East and West ). It can also be heard on records by Claire Daly , Janette Mason and Nana Simopoulos .
