Wolfgang Preisendanz

Wolfgang Preisendanz (born April 28, 1920 in Pforzheim ; † September 29, 2007 in Konstanz ) was a German scholar of German and literary studies .

Life

Wolfgang Preisendanz, the son of a doctor from Pforzheim, was a soldier in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945 after graduating from high school in 1938 at Reuchlin-Gymnasium. After the end of the war he taught at village schools and in 1946 began studying German, Romance languages, history and philosophy at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . It was 1951 when Paul Böckmann at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg with a thesis on the verdict form in the lyrics of the old Goethe and its history since Opitz doctorate and was then taught at the Elector Friedrich-Gymnasium active in Heidelberg. In 1957 he became head of department at the interpreting institute at Heidelberg University. In 1961 he completed his habilitation at the University of Cologne on humor as a poetic imagination.

In 1962, he received a call on the Chair of Modern German Literary History at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster . In 1966 he moved to the University of Konstanz . In 1988 Preisendanz retired ; he was followed by Gerhart von Graevenitz . He was visiting professor at various universities in the USA and Japan.

Act

Wolfgang Preisendanz was one of the seven founding professors of the University of Konstanz and, as professor of German literature and general literary studies, played a key role in the development of the internationally leading Konstanz school of literary studies . For many years he was a member of the Large and Small Senate of the University of Konstanz and thus significantly involved in the structural development of the young university.

The German Press Agency (dpa) stated on October 1st, 2007 that after the Romanist Hans Robert Jauß , the Latinist Manfred Fuhrmann and the Englishist Wolfgang Iser, the last member of the renowned ' Konstanz School ' had died, the Germanist Preisendanz . Together, the scientists had represented a literary profile that was constituted in the interdisciplinary research group “ Poetics and Hermeneutics .

One of the main research areas of Preisendanz was humor . His inaugural lecture in 1970 was devoted to the morphology of jokes. In 1988 he received the “ Kassler Literature Prize for Grotesque Humor ” for his research . He has published numerous scientific papers, particularly on Heinrich Mann . His post-doctoral thesis “Humor as a poetic imagination”, written in 1961, on German realism from ETA Hoffmann to Theodor Fontane is still an important work today.
