Eberhard Galley (born October 28, 1910 in Parchim ; † December 16, 1994 in Düsseldorf ) was a German literary scholar and librarian who made contributions to Heine research .

biography

Eberhard Galley was a son of the pastor and later state superintendent Alfred Galley and his wife Luise, nee. Walter. From 1920 to 1929 he attended the Lauenburg School of Academics in Ratzeburg . He then studied German , history and theology in Göttingen and Rostock . There he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1934.

In 1929 he became active in the Göttingen Wingolf .

His specialist library training led him to the Berlin State Library . In 1938 he began his service at the State and City Library in Düsseldorf. From 1940 to 1948 there was a war-related interruption of his activities through military service and prisoner of war. In 1950 Galley became deputy director of the Düsseldorf library. His main focus soon turned to the expansion and maintenance of the Heine archive located there. In 1964 he became director of the State and City Library in Düsseldorf. When their holdings were largely transferred to the newly founded university and state library in 1970 , he became the first director of the Heinrich Heine Institute , which was newly founded in the same year , the core of which was the Heine archive that he had previously managed.

Focus on Heine philology

After his dissertation, most of Galley's publications dealt with Heinrich Heine. In 1960, the Heine bibliography (1817–1953), submitted with his collaboration by Gottfried Wilhelm, appeared in two volumes . In 1962 the first volume of the Heine yearbook was published, for which Galley was responsible as editor until 1976 . In 1963, JB Metzler'schen Verlagsbuchhandlung published his Realienband zu Heine, which had three further editions by 1976.

After his retirement, Galley and Alfred Estermann tackled the edition project Heinrich Heine's work in the judgment of his contemporaries . The abundance of material not only blew up the original edition plan, but also prevented Galley from witnessing the conclusion of this company himself. By his death in 1994, the first six volumes had been published with a reporting period up to 1841. After a ten-year break, the work was completed between 2002 and 2006 under the direction of Sikander Singh with six further volumes and an additional commentary and register volume.

Honors

Galley was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia on May 13, 1992 .
