Alfred Adolph Estermann (born March 7, 1938 in Windsheim ; † March 23, 2008 in Bad Nauheim ) was a German literary scholar , book historian and bibliographer .

Life

Alfred Estermann was the son of an engineer and studied German and philosophy in Erlangen and Zurich from 1957 to 1963 and received his doctorate in Erlangen with a thesis on the subject of filming literary works . He then worked as a research fellow and received a scholarship from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, and during this time he began indexing the journals of the 19th century.

After working at Athenaion-Verlag and the Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, he went to the City and University Library of Frankfurt am Main in 1978 , where the focus was on the literature of the 19th century being collected and made accessible. Here Estermann once again devoted himself to researching the journals of this period and over the years published two comprehensive journal bibliographies (see “Works”). In Frankfurt am Main he also took over the management of the Schopenhauer Archive . In 1991 he qualified as a professor at the University of Siegen and later taught at the Institute of Book Sciences of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

Estermann was with the literary scholar, book historian and editor Monika Estermann, geb. Ammermann, married.

meaning

Estermann has recognized the source character of the journals and promoted their indexing, whereby he developed and applied his own content analysis method. The bibliographies he has compiled are indispensable resources today and are available in every major library.
