Onofrio Gabrielli , also Gabrieli, (born April 2, 1619 in Gesso , Messina , † September 26, 1706 ibid) was an Italian Baroque painter in Padua and Sicily .

Life

He was born in the small town of Gesso , 16 km from Messina . He received his first artistic training from Domenichino's student Antonio Barbalonga . Before 1640 he went to Rome to the workshop of the important fresco painter and baroque architect Pietro Berrettini, known as Pietro da Cortona , and continued his education under the classical landscape painter Nicolas Poussin . After Pietro da Cortona went to Florence in 1640 and Nicolas Poussin to Paris in 1641 , Onofrio Gabrielli also left Rome and went to Domenico Maroli until 1650 , who, like him, had been trained in Messina at Barbalonga and now lived and worked in Venice . Onofrio studied the works of Titian and Veronese in Veneto . He then went to Padua for a long time, where, according to GB Rossetti, he was in the service of the noble Borromeo family . In addition to family portraits and one of his main works, the frescoes in the Villa Borromeo, he created numerous church pictures in Padua and the surrounding area.

In 1660 he went back to Messina, where he made a name for himself as a painter of panel paintings. In addition to his painting, Onofrio devoted himself to alchemy , which cost him almost all of his fortune, so that he now had to create his once lavishly furnished paintings more sparingly by completing his pictures faster and with less material expenditure.

During the Messina uprising against the Spanish repression in 1674, he also worked as a fortress builder and had to flee to France after the revolt was put down in 1678. After he was pardoned by Philip V of Spain , Onofrio returned to Messina in 1701 and created his late work there.

Many of his paintings were lost during the earthquake of 1783 and especially the severe one of 1908 . In 1983 there was a comprehensive exhibition in Gesso with 20 of his works from Veneto and Sicily.
