Major General Charles Wolcott Ryder

Charles Wolcott Ryder (born January 16, 1892 in Topeka , Kansas , † August 17, 1960 ) was a major general in the United States Army . During the Second World War he led the 34th Infantry Division , later he took command of the IX. US Army Corps in the Pacific War was used (Pacific Theater of Operations).

Life

In 1915 Ryder graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. In the years from 1917 to 1919 he was first as a major, later as Lt. Colonel in the 16th and then in the 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st US Infantry Division in France and Germany.

Between the two world wars, he served in various positions, such as West Point , Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth , Kansas, and with the 15th Infantry Regiment in Tianjin , Republic of China .

In 1941 and 1942 he was Chief of Staff of the VI. Corps. From May 1942 to July 1944 he was commanding general of the 34th Infantry Division, the first American division to be relocated to Europe. During Operation Torch, the division was involved in the first landing operation of the American armed forces in the European theater of war in the Mediterranean region and landed at Operation Terminal in Algiers . After the fighting in North Africa , the unit landed in Salerno and also fought on Monte Cassino in Italy (January 1944).

From September 2, 1944 to December 6, 1948 Ryder was in command of the IX Corps , with which the occupation of Japan was prepared and which, after the surrender of Japan, provided part of the occupation forces in Japan.

Ryder retired and retired in 1950, he died on August 17, 1960 at the age of 68.
