In the 2017 NFL Draft , McCaffrey was selected in the first round as the 8th player by the Carolina Panthers . This made him the second running back to be drafted in 2017 after Leonard Fournette . McCaffrey signed his rookie deal with the Panthers on May 4, 2017 . He was awarded a four-year contract worth $ 17.2 million . McCaffrey made his debut on the first day of the 2017 season against the San Francisco 49ers , which the Panthers won 23-3. In the fifth week of the regular season , when he defeated the Detroit Lions , McCaffrey scored his first touchdown in the NFL. The Panthers increasingly used McCaffrey as a wide receiver in his rookie season . Jonathan Stewart was mainly responsible for the running game . McCaffrey reached the play-offs in 2017 , but he was eliminated with his Panthers directly in the first round against the New Orleans Saints .

In 2018 McCaffrey made his breakthrough as a running back in the NFL. On the one hand, he was able to confirm his outstanding performance in the passing game as a receiver and gained 867 yards of space through the air and caught more than 100 passes of his quarterback . On the other hand, McCaffrey was also the first choice in the running game with the Panthers from his second season. He ran 1,098 yards and scored 7 touchdowns through the run for his team. Despite McCaffrey's individual increase, the Panthers failed to make it to the NFL playoffs in 2018.

In his third year in the NFL ( 2019 ), McCaffrey achieved historic results. In addition to numerous records due to his outstanding receiver qualities as a running back, McCaffrey was the third player in NFL history to simultaneously run more than 1,000 yards and catch more than 1,000 yards in a regular season, previously only Roger Craig and Marshall succeeded Lazy . McCaffrey was able to improve significantly again, especially in the running game. With 1,387 yards of space gained, he was able to book the third most rushing yards of the 2019 season behind Derrick Henry and Nick Chubb . McCaffrey was also in third place in the 2019 season statistics with 15 touchdowns in the rushing touchdown category, only Derrick Henry and Aaron Jones each had one more touchdown. For his performance in the regular season McCaffrey was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his professional career . However, he decided not to take part in the Pro Bowl. With only 5 wins from 16 games, he clearly missed the NFL playoffs with his Panthers in 2019.

In the offseason leading up to the 2020 season , McCaffrey signed a contract extension with the Panthers. In four years he will earn up to $ 64 million, replacing Ezekiel Elliott as the league's highest-paid running back with an average of $ 16 million a year .
