history

Castle Rock was founded in 1874 when Douglas County's eastern border was redesigned in its current location. Castle Rock was chosen as the county seat because of its central location.

The area where Castle Rock is located was originally inhabited by Indians ; these belonged to the Arapahoe and Cheyenne and lived in the country between the Arkansas River and South Platte River . White settlers were drawn to rumors of gold discoveries and the release of land for settlement under the Homestead Act in 1862.

One of the first white settlers in the area was Jeremiah Gould, who by law had acquired about 160 acres south of The (Castle) Rock. At that time the settlement consisted of only a few houses for gold diggers, workers and cowboys. In 1874 Gould donated 120 acres to the new town, which also became the county seat. Six streets were laid out that formed the basis of what is now Castle Rock: Elbert, Jerry, Wilcox, Perry, Castle and Front Street. 77 lots were auctioned for $ 3,400 , a significant sum at the time.

Ultimately, it was the discovery of rhyolite rather than gold that was responsible for the growth of the settlement.

With the construction of the railroad and a locomotive shed came the Denver and Rio Grande Railway . The Elbert Street depot now houses the city's historical museum.

The city is located about 40 km southeast of Denver and 60 km north of Colorado Springs on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains . The Interstate 25 leads to the Town over and three exits allow access to the city.
