Jaylon Smith (* 27. July 1995 in Fort Wayne , Indiana ) is an American American football player at the position of the linebackers . He played college football for the University of Notre Dame and has been with the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League (NFL) since 2016 .

college

From 2013 to 2015, Smith played college football . He attended the University of Notre Dame and played there for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the NCAA Division I FBS. After playing as an outside linebacker in his first season, he was used as a middle linebacker from his sophomore year. In total he ran in 38 games for the Fighting Irish in three years and scored 168 tackles and 4.5 sacks in this period and prevented ten opposing passes. In his last college game, the Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 2016, which Notre Dame lost to Ohio State , Smith tore a cruciate ligament. Nevertheless, on January 11, 2016, he announced that he would be giving up a possible fourth year of college and signing up for the NFL Draft .

NFL

In the 2016 NFL Draft , Smith was selected 34th in the 2nd round by the Dallas Cowboys . Already at the draft it was foreseeable that Smith would not be able to play in his rookie year due to his knee injury.

His NFL debut in the regular season finally made Smith on the first day of the 2017 season in a victory over the New York Giants , in which he scored seven tackles and was able to force a fumbles . Overall, he was in his first NFL season in all 16 games, including six as a starter. He made 80 tackles, two forced fumbles and two defended passes.

In the 2018 season , Smith was used as a starter in all sixteen games. He staked 121 tackles, forced two fumbles, and scored four sacks. Pro Football Focus named him Breakout Player of the Year .

Before the 2019 season, the Cowboys extended the contract with Smith for five years until 2024. The contract amount is 64 million US dollars, of which 35.5 million is guaranteed. As a replacement for the injured Luke Kuechly , Smith was appointed to the Pro Bowl for the first time .
