Career highlights and awards

Mark Travis John Sanchez (* 11. November 1986 in Long Beach , California ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He was most recently with the Washington Redskins in the National Football League (NFL) under contract.

Sanchez was selected as the fifth player in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft (as the second quarterback). He played college football at the University of Southern California (USC) for the USC Trojans . Sanchez was only the fourth rookie quarterback in the NFL to win his first play-off game .

Early life

Sanchez was born and raised in Southern California . As a high school quarterback at Mission Viejo High School , he was named Football Player of the Year by several major college recruitment organizations and was named the nation's top high school quarterback for 2005.

College career

He chose to play at USC, which is where he started his redshirt (sports) junior season. Because of his origins, Sanchez has come to the fore as a symbol of Mexican-American identity and a role model for children. In his only season as quarterback, Sanchez led the USC Trojans to a 12-1 season and No. 2 in the Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the AP Poll while winning the "Offensive MVP Award" at the Rose Bowl . He became USC's first quarterback since Todd Marinovich , who completed the remaining training to go to the NFL thereafter. Furthermore, because of his red shirt season, he had earned enough credit points to leave the USC campus with a bachelor's degree.

2006

In April 2006, Sanchez was arrested after being accused of sexual assault by a USC student . He was released from prison the following day. On June 3, 2006, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced that no charges will be brought against Sanchez, and Sanchez was reinstated on the team. Team-related disciplinary proceedings were also issued for drinking alcohol as a minor and providing false information about the person when he was arrested.

When John David Booty had to undergo back surgery after the first day of spring training in 2006, Sanchez was a regular in the spring. The coaches declared Booty a quarterback after he returned for fall training camp. In the 2006 season, Sanchez played in six games, three of seven passes were caught for 63 yards of space, with an interception .

2007

In the 2007 season, Sanchez broke his thumb on his throwing hand and was absent from the first game against Idaho. The following week he returned to his team. Mid-season, Sanchez was starting quarterback for the Arizona game after Booty broke a finger on his throwing hand.

Achievements and honors

After just 22 college games, Sanchez made himself available for the 2009 NFL Draft . In the associated NFL Combine , he was the second best quarterback in the ranking, behind Matthew Stafford of the University of Georgia . Sanchez was selected as the fifth player by the New York Jets , with coach Rex Ryan giving three players and the draft picks in the first (No. 17 overall) and second round of the draft to the Cleveland Browns in order to be allowed to take their fifth draft pick. On June 10, Sanchez signed a five-year deal with the Jets, a record deal worth $ 50 million. On August 26, 2009, Sanchez was then appointed starting quarterback . Sanchez had a decent rookie season in which he gained 2,444 yards, throwing “only” twelve touchdowns at 20 interceptions, but helped the Jets reach the play-offs . Both the wildcard away game against the Cincinnati Bengals (24-14) and the AFC semifinals against the San Diego Chargers (17-14) were won, with Sanchez playing well in both games. Sanchez had a quarterback rating of 139.4 and was only the fourth rookie quarterback in NFL history to win his first two play-off games. In the AFC Championship Game , Sanchez and the Jets failed at the Indianapolis Colts , but Sanchez was voted into the All-Rookie Team by The Sporting News .

On February 2, 2010, Sanchez decided to have surgery because of a torn ligament in his left knee. In his second season he played all 16 season games from the start, improved to 3,291 yards and 17 touchdowns in 13 interceptions and led the Jets again as a wildcard team in the play-offs. Again Sanchez played well in the postseason: In the first round, the Colts were defeated away 17-16, after which arch-rivals New England Patriots were eliminated away with 28-21. In the AFC Championship Game, the Jets failed 19-24 against the Pittsburgh Steelers . Sanchez scored 616 yards of space and five touchdowns with only one interception in the entire play-offs.

The 2011 season was not so good for Sanchez and the Jets. They won only eight games of the season and missed the play-offs, although Sanchez himself played solidly (3,474 yards, 26 touchdowns and 18 interceptions). In the offseason, the Jets caused a bang when they signed quarterback Tim Tebow , who had led the Denver Broncos to the AFC semi-finals. However, Sanchez prevailed against Tebow in the pre-season, but experienced a bad season in which he only gained 2,678 yards and threw only 13 touchdowns in 17 interceptions. In the 19:49 loss to New England, Sanchez accidentally ran into the bum of his own lineman Brandon Moore , fumbled the football and gave New England an easy touchdown. This faux pas came to be known as "Butt Fumble" and was voted one of the season's most embarrassing moments by ESPN . Sanchez played so badly in the arduous 7: 6 win against the bottom line Arizona Cardinals that coach Ryan replaced him for two games with reserve quarterback Greg McElroy . In the crucial game of the season against the Tennessee Titans , Sanchez threw four interceptions and made two ball losses in the last 90 seconds. With only six wins this season, the play-offs were clearly missed. In the 2013 preseason, Sanchez seriously injured his shoulder, so that he was out the whole season. In the 2014 season, Sanchez joined the Philadelphia Eagles and became reserve quarterback behind Nick Foles .

After the 2015 season, Sanchez moved to the reigning Super Bowl champion , the Denver Broncos. There, after Peyton Manning's career ended and Brock Osweiler's departure, the post of starting quarterback was vacant. However, Sanchez could not prevail in preparation against the competition and was dismissed before the start of the season.

Just minutes after his release in Denver, the Dallas Cowboys signed him in response to Tony Romo's injury .

On March 23, 2017, he was hired as a free agent by the Chicago Bears .

On November 19, 2018, he was signed by the Washington Redskins as back-up quarterback for Colt McCoy after Alex Smith was out for the remainder of the season with a leg injury.

In July 2019, after ten seasons, Sanchez submitted his resignation papers to take up an analyst position at ABC / ESPN.
