The Albany State University is an original African-American University in Albany in the state of Georgia . Most recently around 4,200 students were enrolled.
history
Inspired by the literary work The Souls of Black Folk by the American civil rights activist and philosopher WEB Du Bois , Joseph Winthrop Holley returned to Albany after completing his studies at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and founded a school. With a $ 2,600 donation from the Rowland Hazards family, he was able to set up a board of trustees and purchase approximately 200,000 square feet of land. The aim of the school was to provide the Afro-American population with elementary education and teacher training. In 1917 the school became the Georgia Normal and Agricultural College .
In 1932 the school was accepted into the University system of Georgia , in 1943 it became Albany State College . In the early 1960s, the college played an important role in the American civil rights movement , as it was here that the Albany Movement came into being, which brought Martin Luther King Jr. to the city, among others . University degrees were first offered in 1981, and the college was granted university status in 1996.
In 2004 the university received a new stadium, in 2006 new housing units for students.
