The Armstrong Atlantic State University , known and Armstrong Atlantic , Armstrong or short AASU is a public university in Savannah in the State of Georgia and part of the University System of Georgia . More than 7,500 students are enrolled in around 100 courses.

history

The university was founded in 1935 by the city's mayor as Armstrong Junior College . Originally the college was in the city center, the buildings were donated by businessman George F. Armstrong , in whose honor the institution bears her name. In 1959, the school, now called Armstrong College of Savannah , became part of the University System of Georgia and had the status of a community college . In 1964 it was already offering higher education as Armstrong State College .

Donald Livingston gave State College an area of ​​one square kilometer in the southwest of the city. After eight buildings were erected there, the facility moved there in 1966. The campus has been landscaped since 1993 and is now an arboretum . In 1996 the college was granted state university status and has been called Armstrong Atlantic State University since then .

The Windward Commons

The campus in the southwest of the city is about 15 minutes by car from the center. It is 1.1 million square meters and has the status of an arboretum thanks to its numerous flowers, ferns, magnolias , oak trees and its Spanish moss .

The center of the campus is the Lane Library with around 200,000 books and 18,000 audiovisual media. In the Science Center , scientific and technical courses are taught. In 2010 a 5700 square meter building was constructed for the Student Union . It houses restaurants and cafes, a theater, a bookstore and a convenience shop .

The university's sports facilities are located in the south-east of the campus. These include a gym, basketball courts, and a swimming pool. The Alumni Arena offers space for 4,000 spectators and is the venue for the university's teams.

Although the university is considered a commuter university, around 1400 students live in four dormitories in the south-western part of the campus. 600 students live in the Wind Turbine Commons alone , which opened in 2006. The other residences are Compass Point , University Terrace, and University Crossings .

students life

There are over 60 student organizations at the university and nine student associations. The two magazines The Inkwell and Calliope are published by the student body .

The university's eleven sports teams include baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, golf, softball, tennis and volleyball. The teams are known as Pirates .

Over 23,000 alumni are associated with the university.
