The University of North Georgia (UNG) is a state university with five colleges in the US state of Georgia . Also known as The Military College of Georgia , it is one of the six Senior Military Colleges (SMC) in the United States.

It was created in 2013 following a resolution by the highest governing body of the University System of Georgia (USG) by merging the North Georgia College & State University (NGCSU) founded in 1873 in Dahlonega and the Gainesville State College founded in Gainesville in 1964 and has five regional campuses .

UNG consists of five campuses in northern Georgia: The oldest is Dahlonega , which was built in 1873 and is about an hour's drive from the capital, Atlanta . There are also Oakwood ( Gainesville ) and Watkinsville ( Oconee ), both former properties of Gainesville State College. Cumming also opened in 2012, followed by Blue Ridge in 2015.

Statistics and values

In the fall of 2015, the University of North Georgia had 17,289 students enrolled , 56 percent of whom were women. Approx. 77.5 percent were "white (American)", of the other ethnic groups, Hispanics were represented as the largest group with 10.6 percent. A total of 97 percent were in an undergraduate program ( associate and baccalaureate ), and 263 students came from abroad. The main subjects chosen are biology, management, psychology, criminal justice and marketing.

Cadet Corps

In addition to offering five regional campuses UNG serves as one of only six higher military colleges in the US, with the Cadet Corps ( Corps of Cadets ) is located in Dahlonega. The University of North Georgia offers the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program of the United States Army under the motto The Military College of Georgia . 744 students are currently participating in the ROTC program, more than four fifths of them men, predominantly white. A selection is made before acceptance into the program, whereby less than two out of three applicants are accepted. In 2015/16, 62 cadets received scholarships.

The members of the cadet corps, which bears the name Boar's Head Brigade , live in the so-called Military Village . This consists of three building complexes: Liberty Hall, Patriot Hall and Gaillard Hall. The rooms are double occupied. The day for the freshman ( freshman ) starts early at 6:45 am and is tightly organized with sports, inspection and studies. Sometimes military training takes place on the weekend. In later semesters, the cadets themselves take responsibility for the younger generation. During the summer break, stays abroad, internships or the like can be used or part of the US Army training.

The Military Leadership Center (MLC) was opened in 2004 in honor of the politician and entrepreneur Brooks Pennington, Jr. , who was a member of the Cadet Corps from 1943 to 1944 and a World War II and Korea veteran. The building houses classrooms and conference rooms, a media center, a rifle range, the brigade headquarters, and an atrium.

An arch ( The North Georgia Arch ) was erected by the 51 cadet class to honor their fallen comrades in the Korean War . Blue Ridge Rifles

In 1950, a nationally recognized drill team was founded, which has been called the Blue Ridge Rifles since 1958 . This is based on the unit of the same name of the Confederate States Army .

Golden Eagle Band

The origins of the band of the corps go back to 1873. Its name has been changed several times, since 1972 it has been known as the Golden Eagle Band ( golden eagle ). Students can apply for the Roy E. Bottom Scholarship.

Center for Global Engagement

The Center for Global Engagement (CGE) serves to strengthen intercultural competence and to promote international exchange. The Cadet English Language Training Team (CELTT) was also set up for military exchanges.
