The NATO School Oberammergau in Oberammergau ( Bavaria ) is the primary training and education center of NATO at the operational level.

history

The school is located on the grounds of the 1935 built former Conrad von Hötzendorf - barracks in Oberammergau district of St. Gregory at the foot of Laber . These barracks and the area were used for training purposes from the very beginning.

In October 1937 the mountain news department 54 of the 1st mountain division of the Wehrmacht moved into the barracks. When this unit was relocated to the Balkans, Messerschmitt AG used the site, developed rocket engines there and produced the first series of military aircraft with jet engines of the Messerschmitt Me 262 type in an underground factory .

After the war ended in 1945, the underground factory was dismantled. American units took over the barracks in order to use them as training grounds from then on. Today's NATO School emerged from the US Army Special Weapons School founded in March 1953 and offered two courses that year. In 1975 it was renamed NATO School (SHAPE) .

On December 18, 1984, terrorists from the Red Army Faction attempted to detonate a bomb in the NATO school, but this failed.

In 2003 the school was given its current name NATO School as part of its subordination to the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation . In 2005 the Manfred Wörner Hall was inaugurated, a new lecture hall named after Manfred Wörner .
