Senior Military College

A senior military college (SMC) in the USA is a college or university that has a special legally regulated status in the context of officer training. In addition to civil colleges and the Military Junior Colleges (MJC), they are the third form of colleges for the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), a training program for officers in the US armed forces . In contrast to the civil universities, the Senior Military Colleges maintain a cadet corps in which all officer candidates of the ROTC are organized, are trained and are subject to the rules of military discipline.

The status of the aforementioned colleges as part of the military training of officers of the US armed forces is by a separate section in the legislation regulated the United States. The colleges mentioned above are named and therefore only they have the special status as Senior Military College .

The following characteristics and privileges characterize a senior military college :

  • Graduates receive an officer license from the U.S. Forces and have the right to serve as an active officer.
  • The commanders of the cadet corps and officers for military training may be provided by active officers of the US armed forces. The officers are to be selected in agreement with the university.
  • The college-affiliated ROTC cannot be dissolved without the consent of the Senior Military College .

In addition, the US Army's directive on the ROTC (Army Regulation 145-1) regulates further details for the Senior Military College :

  • They must offer at least a baccalaureate degree .
  • All undergraduate -Students is offering military training if they are suitable.
  • A cadet corps that is subject to rules of military discipline is to be maintained.
  • The cadets must wear uniforms on the campus .
  • Intended to develop students' personal skills and discipline through military training.
  • The universities have to adhere to the standards similar to the military academies of the armed forces.
