Rod Christopher "Chris" Godwin Jr. (born February 27, 1996 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American American football player on the position of wide receiver . He played college football for Pennsylvania State University . He has been with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League (NFL) since 2017 .

college

Godwin attended Middletown High School in Middletown , Delaware . He was rated by 247Sports as a four-star recruit, i.e. one of the top 300 players of his year. He was invited to the Under Armor All-America Game , the all-star game for high school players. From 2014 to 2016, Godwin played football in college . He attended Pennsylvania State University , where he played for the Penn State Nittany Lions in the NCAA Division I FBS. In the 2016 season, he was the lead receiver for the Nittany Lions. He played his last college game with the Rose Bowl , in which he caught two touchdown passes in the 49:52 loss of Penn State to the University of Southern California and scored 187 yards of space. As a result, Godwin decided to forego his senior year of college and enroll in the 2017 NFL Draft .

Overall, Godwin ran in 39 games for Penn State, in which he caught 154 passes for 2,421 yards and 18 touchdowns.

NFL

Godwin was selected 84th in the third round in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . In his rookie season, Godwin competed with DeSean Jackson and Adam Humphries for the position of second receiver behind Mike Evans . In the past two weeks, Godwin was given extra time due to an injury to Jackson. In the last game of the season, he caught his first touchdown in the NFL with a 39-yard pass from Jameis Winston with nine seconds remaining , which secured the Buccaneers victory over the New Orleans Saints . In total, he caught seven passes for 111 yards in this game. For his performance he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week .

In his second season Godwin was able to establish himself increasingly and scored 842 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

The 2019 season turned out to be Godwin's most successful season to date. In the 35:22 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 12, he caught two touchdown passes and gained 184 yards of space with his captured passes, for which he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week . On December 17, 2019, Godwin was nominated for the Pro Bowl for the first time . In total, he caught 86 passes for 1333 yards and nine touchdowns during the season, leading his team in all of these statistics. With a hamstring injury, Godwin missed the last two games of the season. With his 1333 yards of space gain Godwin was third in this statistic in the NFL, only behind Michael Thomas and Julio Jones .

Before the 2020 season, Godwin changed his shirt number and decided to use the number 14 in the future. He left 12, his old number, to quarterback Tom Brady , who had moved to Tampa and had previously worn this number for the New England Patriots for twenty years .
