The Davey O'Brien Award , or officially Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award , is a Davey O'Brien award given annually by the Davey O'Brien Foundation to the best college football quarterback in the United States . The Davey O'Brien Hall of Fame is located in Fort Worth , Texas and hosts an annual ceremony where the winner is presented with the trophy.
The award was first presented in 1977, right after O'Brien's death, as the Davey O'Brien Memorial Trophy . The first award winner was Earl Campbell , a running back from the University of Texas , because originally the best NCAA football players from the southwest of the country were honored. After Billy Sims was another running back in 1978 and Mike Singletary, a linebacker in 1979 and 1980 , the award was given its current name and is only given to quarterbacks.
The only players who have won the award twice since then are Ty Detmer , Danny Wuerffel , Jason White and Deshaun Watson .
