Tytus Howard (born May 23, 1996 in Monroeville , Alabama ) is an American football offensive tackle for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Alabama State .

Early career

Howard attended County High School, where he played as a quarterback . There he also played basketball

college

Howard's college football career began with a Facebook message. His mother, Teresa Rivers, sent a message to Alabama State Head Coach Reggie Barlow asking him to take a look at her son, a high school quarterback. Rivers thought that her son deserved a chance to play on the next level, and that close as possible. Along with the news, Rivers also broadcast some game highlights.

Barlow showed his staff the highlights. Although the coaches did not see Howard as a college quarterback, they recognized the potential in the high school senior's athleticism and unpolished ability and took him on.

After his first year as a tight end , he received a scholarship despite not playing a single game. This made Howard the first man in his family to go to college on a scholarship.

A change of position went hand in hand with the scholarship. The ASU coaches first tried testing Howard on the scout team to see if he had the right footwork to make the switch to offensive tackle, then focus on making him look like a tackle physically as well to let.

After a Redshirt year in 2014, he played eight games the next year, six of them as a starter on the offensive line. In 2016 he started and played seven college football games for Alabama. In 2017 he played as a tackle in all eleven games. He led his team on pancakes and only allowed one sack . He helped his team win five of their last six games.

NFL

Howard was selected by the Houston Texans in the first round (23rd pick) of the 2019 NFL Draft . The Texans believe that because Howard has played several other offensive positions, it will help him gain a complete understanding of passing play, pass protection, and running play. He is the first Alabama-State player to be selected in the first round of an NFL draft. Previously, the earliest pick for Alabama State was Curtis Green as the 46th pick in the 1981 NFL Draft .

Personal

Howard is the son of Tyran Rivers and Nathaniel Howards.
