Kaevatsi laid is an Estonian Baltic Sea island on the so-called Väinameri . It is located east of the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German and Swedish Dagö ).
Location and description
Kaevatsi Island ( Kaevatsi laid ) is 2.6 km long and up to 720 meters wide in the north. It has an area of 1.4 square kilometers. The northern part of the island rises up to 7.7 meters above sea level. Administratively, Kaevatsi laid belongs to the village of Sarve in the rural municipality of Hiiumaa .
The island is 250 meters from the tip of the Sarve peninsula. The islands of Kaevatsi laid and Saarnaki laid form a natural shelter for the entrance to the port of Sarve. The sea between the peninsula and Kaevatsi laid is shallow. At some times it is possible to walk to the island.
Kaevatsi is surrounded by numerous islets, the most important of which are Võrkrahu, Põtkurahu and Paasrahu. The island's vegetation is dominated by juniper . The Hiiumaa island reserve is located around Kaevatsi laid, but the island does not belong to it.
colonization
As early as 1564 there are said to have been two farms on Kaevatsi laid. Other sources date the first written mention under the Swedish name Swinholm to the year 1567. In the 18th century there was a limestone quarry and a windmill on the island. In 1970 seven people were still living on the island. The island has been uninhabited since 1974. The abandoned buildings are still preserved. Most of the former residents still carry the Estonian family name Kaevats today.
