From 2017 to 2018, Haskins played football in college . He attended Ohio State University , where he played for the Ohio State Buckeyes in NCAA Division I FBS. Overall, he came in the two years on 413 successful passes with 590 pass attempts and 5,396 yards and 54 thrown touchdowns with nine interceptions and a quarterback rating of 174.0.

After a red shirt year , Haskins was initially a backup behind JT Barrett and was rarely used. The breakthrough came in the 2018 season, when Haskins won the championship in the Big Ten Conference as a starter with the Buckeyes with a record of 13-1. He set new records for the Big Ten Conference this season with 47 thrown and four run touchdowns and 4,580 yards of space gain. In the Heisman Trophy 2018 election , Haskins finished third behind Kyler Murray and Tua Tagovailoa . In the Rose Bowl , he led Ohio State to a 28:23 win over the Washington Huskies . Haskins made 25 of 37 passes for 251 yards and threw three touchdowns. This made him the sixth player in the NCAA I Football Bowl Subdivision to get 50 or more touchdown passes in one season, and he was named MVP of the Rose Bowl.

On January 7, 2019, Haskins announced that he would be giving up his senior year of college and enrolling for the 2019 NFL Draft.

NFL

Haskins was selected 15th in the first round by the Washington Redskins in the 2019 NFL Draft . With the Redskins, Haskins will wear the number 7, which had not previously been awarded since 1985 in honor of Joe Theismann , who won Super Bowl XVII as quarterback with the Redskins . Haskins already wore jersey number 7 at college and in a phone call with Theismann had received his consent to be allowed to use the 7 with the Redskins. Haskins competes with the more experienced quarterbacks Case Keenum and Colt McCoy for the position as starting quarterback .

Haskins made his NFL debut on Matchday 4 of the 2019 season . He came on for Keenum in the second quarter after Keenum didn't perform well. On his debut, Haskins made 9 of 17 passes for 107 yards and threw three interceptions , after which he was transferred back to the bench in favor of McCoy before the next game. In week 8 he came on his second assignment, where he had difficulties again. He was substituted on for Keenum at the beginning of the second half of the Thursday Night Game against the Minnesota Vikings after Keenum had to leave the field on suspicion of a concussion. Haskins completed three of five passes for 33 yards and threw an interception.

After Haskins first started as a starter in week 9 in the loss to the Buffalo Bills and had shown his best performance to date with a quarterback rating of 86.2, interim coach Bill Callahan appointed him as a starter for the rest of the season. On matchday 12, Haskins led the Redskins despite a poor performance with only 13 successful passes out of 29 attempts, no touchdown pass and an interception to a 19:16 win over the Detroit Lions , which he celebrated his first victory as a starter. He received media attention mainly because he missed standing on the field on the last play ( victory formation ) by taking a selfie with a fan and had to be represented there by his backup Keenum. For his behavior, Haskins has been criticized as being unprofessional.
