Michael Zimmer (* 5. June 1956 in Peoria , Illinois ) is an American American football trainer. He is currently the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings in the National Football League (NFL). Before that, he worked for many years as a defensive coordinator .

Career

He played soccer and baseball during high school . In college, he began as a quarterback for Illinois State University before becoming a linebacker after an injury . After another injury, Zimmer ended his playing career and never took part in the NFL Draft .

Trainer

In 1979 he took over a coaching position for the first time as a defensive assistant. In 1981 he moved to Weber State College , where he took on various coaching activities, including the role of defensive coordinator for the first time . In 1989 he moved to Washington State University and took over the defensive work there.

For the 1994 season he moved to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL at the request of Barry Switzer . Initially as an assistant coach, he took over the training of the defensive backs in his second season . For the 2000 season he was then appointed defensive coordinator. With his conversion to a 4-3 defense he stabilized the defense, the cowboys allowed the fewest yards in 2003. Despite frequent changes in the head coach position, he remained defensive coordinator until 2006.

At the offer of Bobby Petrino , he moved to the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 . After only three wins from 13 games, Petrino left the team again. As a result, Zimmer no longer extended the contract after the end of the season.

Before the 2008 season , the Cincinnati Bengals signed him as a defensive coordinator. The team finished the following season with the fourth strongest defensive performance. Also in 2011 and 2012 the Bengals convinced with a strong defense, the sixth and seventh best in the league. He was then named as a possible head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2013 , but they decided in favor of Rob Chudzinski .

Two weeks after Leslie Frazier was fired , the Minnesota Vikings named Mike Zimmer as their new head coach on January 15, 2014. After a difficult first season in 2014 , Zimmer finished third in the division with the Vikings with seven wins and nine losses.

In 2015 he reached the play-offs with his team and finished the NFC North with eleven wins, for the first time since 2009. In the wildcard play-off they faced the Seattle Seahawks .
