The Panthers finished their first season under Ron Rivera with a negative balance (6-10), but this was a significant improvement on the previous season, which ended the Panthers as the worst team in the entire NFL. Especially on the offensive they were much better, but the defensive was still one of the worst in the league. In the next season the Panthers under Rivera lost 8 of the first 10 games, but were able to finish the season with a 7-9 record.

The following season, the Panthers won their division with a 12-4 record, but failed in the Divisional Round of the playoffs to the San Francisco 49ers . In the 2014 NFL season , the Panthers again secured the NFC South title, although they had a negative record with 7-8-1. With victories over the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals , Rivera won the NFC title a second time (the first time as head coach) and moved into Super Bowl 50 with the Panthers . There the favorite Panthers were defeated by the Denver Broncos relatively clearly with 10:24.

In the following season, the Panthers could not build on the success, they finished the season as the last of the NFC South . In the following year, the playoffs could be reached again, but the Panthers failed directly in the wildcard round at the New Orleans Saints .
