Peter Berchem (born March 23, 1866 in Cologne ; † December 30, 1922 there ) was a German elementary school teacher and is considered the first important Cologne dialect lyricist.

Life

Peter Berchem was born in 1866 as the son of a greengrocer at the Great Greek Market in downtown Cologne and grew up in Schnurgasse. After attending the primary school in Martinsfeld , where he was taught together with Wilhelm Räderscheidt , he attended the preparatory school for the teachers' seminar at An der Wollküche . He completed his teacher training in Brühl .

After graduating, Peter Berchem taught at the elementary schools in Bayenthal and in Vringsveedel at St. Severin . At the elementary school Loreleystraße in the south of Cologne he worked for many years as vice-principal . From 1912 Berchem wrote numerous poems, songs, aphorisms and stories in the Cologne language , which were published by the Heimatverein Alt-Köln after the intercession of his school friend Wilhelm Räderscheid . Since then, his poems and stories have been published regularly in the Cologne daily newspapers and the magazines Alt-Köln and Jung-Köln . His first volume of poetry, Gespingks un spintiseet, was published at Christmas 1916, and it was quickly sold out. The second edition of this volume appeared on December 30, 1922, the day of his death .

Peter Berchem, deeply rooted in the Catholic faith , devoted himself intensively and self-sacrificially to the care of the poor and orphans as Vincent Brother and Prefect of the St. Paul Men's Congregation . On pilgrimages to Kevelaer he was venerated by the participants as the lead singer of the Lauretanian litany .
