The early selection of Jones was considered a surprise for many experts and fans, as Dwayne Haskins, a previously considered stronger quarterback, was still available. In addition, the Giants had another first round vote in 17th place, where Jones would very likely also have been available.

In the preseason Jones showed a good performance with 29 successful passes in 34 attempts for 416 yards of space and two touchdowns and went into the 2019 season as a backup for long-time starter Eli Manning . Jones made his NFL debut in the first week of the regular season when he was substituted on for Manning when he was clearly behind in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys . Jones made three of four passes to their destination, scoring 17 yards, but he also lost a fumble .

After the second game day he got preference over Eli Manning and was appointed starting quarterback . On his debut as a starter, he led the Giants to a 32:31 win after a 10-28 deficit at halftime against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . This made him the first rookie quarterback for the Giants since Scott Brunner in 1980, who won his opening game as a starter. With an ankle injury, Jones was suspended for two game days before returning in Week 16. He finished his rookie season with 3,027 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
