Tesnota (Russian for "narrow", international title "Closeness", original title " Теснота ") is a Russian drama directed by Kantemir Balagov , which premiered on May 24, 2017 at the Cannes Film Festival , where the film was featured in the Un Certain Regard was on display. Tesnota was nominated for the Caméra d'Or in Cannes and tells of a situation inspired by true events that a Jewish family living in the North Caucasus finds itself in the diaspora .

action

In Nalchik in the North Caucasus in 1998. In order for a family of the Jewish community in the Russian Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria to make ends meet, the 24-year-old Ilana, a rebellious oddball, has to lend a hand in her father Avi's workshop. She strictly refuses to wear a dress, as her mother Dina wanted, and feels much more comfortable in her dungarees.

One day, when friends and relatives get together to celebrate the engagement of their younger brother David, he and his bride are kidnapped that same evening. Because it is out of the question for the tightly knit Jewish community to call in the police, but the kidnappers are demanding a very high ransom, the family believes they will have to sell their auto repair shop. Ilana and her parents do everything in their own way to get David released and seek help from members of the Jewish community.

production

The film is the directorial debut of Kantemir Balagov , who studied with Alexander Sokurow , who also co-produced the film. According to his statements, Balagov tells of true events that the director first heard from his father and then from other eyewitnesses. The Russian who was 26 years old at the premiere of the film and was born in Nalchik, remembers his childhood in a dangerous but solidary world of clans and tells of a Jewish family living in the diaspora in the North Caucasus. He himself had known a Jewish girl who had this happened. Balagov tries in his film to show how far people / parents go to save a family member, especially one of their children, and the relationships in the family in the film are his relationships in his family, according to Balagov. Balagov tells the story for this from the perspective of the rebellious Ilana.

The exterior shots were taken in Nalchik

According to Balagov, his film was initially perceived by other Russian producers as “too little commercial”, and he himself believed that nobody in the Russian Federation wanted to see “a story about Cabardians and Jews ”. So Balagov was forced to make the film on a very small budget, but with the support of Alexander Sokurov. Like himself, his cameraman was a novice, and for most actors it was their first film.

Darya Zhovner took on the role of the rebellious Ilana, Artem Tsypin that of her father Avi and Olga Dragunova that of her mother Dina. David, Ilana's brother, plays Veniamin Kats .

The indoor shots took place in Saint Petersburg , the outdoor shots in Nalchik . Filming lasted a total of 23 days.

A trailer for the film was released in spring 2017. The film premiered on May 24, 2017 at the Cannes Film Festival , where it was shown in the Un Certain Regard section. The film was shown for the first time in Germany at the Munich Film Festival on June 27, 2017 . At the beginning of September 2017 there was a screening at the Telluride Film Festival . At the end of the same month the film was presented at the San Sebastián International Film Festival . In April 2018 the film will be shown at the New Directors / New Films Festival.

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 87 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

In a review of the film by Spiegel Online it was said that the material and the low budget were actually suitable for a neorealistic staging, but Kantemir Balagov apparently created pulsating, expressive images out of nowhere that burned in, and his debut film would therefore be right celebrated as the great discovery: “In one shot, he only holds onto the neck of a figure to illustrate the pressure it is under.” Tesnota also has something ready for those who have no knowledge of history or images The criticism continues. Leading actress Darya Zhovner has the cinematic magnetism and tomboy charm of Kristen Stewart , and you can hardly get enough of her.
