action

Jesse belongs to a special unit called the fire jumpers ("Smokejumpers"), who parachute into inaccessible areas in Wyoming in the event of forest fires , for example to start counterfire or break fire breaks.

One day a forest fire breaks out, which is to be put out by ground troops. Inmates from a nearby detention center are used. The unscrupulous convict Shaye wants to use this opportunity to break out. He had the fire started - as part of a perfidious plan that he wants to implement with the help of his corrupt lawyer and a few fellow prisoners. During the extinguishing work, the accomplices overwhelm and kill their guards. They leave the other inmates locked in the transport vehicle. Disguised as firefighters, the criminals escape while the fire continues to spread unhindered.

Biologist Jennifer, who studies birds in the forest, is also surprised by the fire. While trying to escape, she runs into the alleged firefighters, who - initially without her knowledge - take them hostage . Meanwhile, Jesse lets himself be flown to the forest, where he sets up a counterfire. On the way back, he spots the group and jumps off to help them. The fire jumpers' base has now become aware of the fact that the ground crew does not answer radio calls . Fire chief Wynt rushes to the rescue and can save the prisoners at the last moment.

When the group around Shaye reaches a forest hut, he gives up the camouflage. He orders Jesse to be killed, but at the same time uses the situation to get rid of one of his accomplices. However, Jesse escapes on a motorcycle and is able to free Jennifer. However, there is only one direction for both parties to escape the fire. On the way, Shaye also kills the other two accomplices to save the promised money. There is another confrontation, in which Jennifer again falls into Shaye's violence.

In the fire jumper base, however, it is becoming apparent that a huge firestorm is imminent and Jesse is moving directly towards it. Chief Wynt decides to come to his aid. They meet at a lake. Jesse confronts Wynt, whom he suspects of having started the fire. He admits to have acted for the money. Together they try to save Jennifer from Shaye's violence when the firestorm is just beginning. In the showdown , both Wynt and Shaye be killed. Jesse and Jennifer barely survive the disaster.

criticism

  • Thomas Poß on zelluloid.de: “Firestorm” doesn't convince with an innovative plot, but the flaming hell is nice to look at and the film is actually always exciting.
  • Richard Oehmann on artechock.de: Since the conflagrations, the bad guys and also the good old Scott Glenn [...] are not disturbing, but together give the impression of a sprawling Lassie episode, the film carefully focuses on the probably most boring leading actor of the end of the century […] which is definitely enough to save his Farrah Fawcett-like partner from the firestorm, but not Firestorm itself.
