Mark Henry Washington (* 28. December 1947 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a former American American football player . He won the Super Bowl twice ( VI , XII ) as a cornerback with the Dallas Cowboys .
Player career
college
Mark Washington attended high school in his hometown . After graduating from high school, he studied at Morgan State University in Baltimore . At college he played college football for Morgan State Bears . With his in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) settled team, he won the Tangerine Bowl in 1966. In 1968 he managed to win the championship of the CIAA.
NFL
Mark Washington was selected in the 1970 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, who were trained by Tom Landry , in the 13th round in 335th place. Washington found in Dallas with Mel Renfro and Herb Adderley strong competitors for his player position, both of whom were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after their careers . He was therefore initially used as a substitute in the defense .
In its first year of play, Washington was able to win the championship of the National Football Conference (NFC) with the Cowboys after a 17:10 win over the San Francisco 49ers . In the following Super Bowl V Washington managed to fend off a field goal by the Baltimore Colts , but this did not change the 16:13 defeat of his team.
The following year , Roger Staubach took on the role of starting quarterback for the Dallas team . Mark Washington, who was out for most of the season due to a knee injury at the beginning of the game round, and the Cowboys won Super Bowl VI against the Miami Dolphins coached by Don Shula after a 14-3 win over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game with 24: 3.
Herb Adderley retired after the 1972 season. Mark Washington's hope of being able to take his position as a starter was not fulfilled. Adderley was instead replaced by Charlie Waters .
In the 1975 season , Washington was able to move into the Super Bowl for the third time. His team initially won the NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams with 37: 7, but could not prevail against the Pittsburgh Steelers , who were looked after by Chuck Noll , and lost in Super Bowl X with just 21:17. Mark Washington was called up in this game as a starter and could not prevent the outstanding performance of his opponent Lynn Swann in this game. Swann managed to gain 161 yards by catching the pass . He also used a pass catch to a touchdown for the team from Pittsburgh and was elected MVP after the game .
Two years later, however, the Dallas Cowboys achieved their second Super Bowl victory with Mark Washington. He moved with his team after twelve wins and two defeats in the 1977 regular season in the NFC Championship Game, where the Minnesota Vikings had no chance in their 23: 6 defeat. This game was followed by a 27:10 win over the Denver Broncos , which Mark Washington could win his second Super Bowl.
Mark Washington was sacked by the Dallas Cowboys after the 1979 season and then joined the New England Patriots . After a year with the Patriots, he ended his career.
After the career
Mark Washington worked in the chemical industry after his career.
Honors
Mark Washington was inducted into his college's hall of fame in 1993 .
