action
The hero of the story is the aging writer Ford Newcomb, who has suffered from writer's block since the death of his wife Pat and who has cut himself off from his environment. His interest is only aroused by the young girl Jackie Maxwell, when she tells him the story of a woman who was stoned by her neighbors because she loved the devil. Ford immediately suspects a true story behind it and decides with Jackie to find out what happened.
During her research, Jackie on the one hand becomes more and more obsessed with the devil and gets into a psychological crisis, on the other hand she encounters the real devil who tries to win her love and arouses Ford's jealousy. In the end it turns out that the devil's target was not Jackie, but Ford. He offers a pact that against Ford's soul he would resurrect his late wife. But Ford opts for Jackie.
The book ends happily across the board, the spook comes to an end, the main characters find their great love and even Ford's writer's block is overcome.
particularities
Despite all the clichés, the novel cannot be denied a certain literary claim. In the story, both protagonists take turns as first-person narrators. Large parts of the plot are told twice, which not only illuminates the characters of the two, but also makes the novel more complex.
