The Lydia is a former cargo and passenger ship that has served as a tourist attraction on Le Barcarès beach since 1967 .

details

The ship was built in 1931 as Moonta at the Danish shipyard Burmeister & Wain . Until February 1955, the Moonta sailed under the Australian flag for the Adelaide Steamship Company between the ports of Adelaide, Port Pirie, Port Lincoln, Whyalla and Wallaroo. After a short layover, the Moonta was chartered by the Tasmanian Steamers shipping company for six months from June 1955 . On December 21, 1955, the Greek shipping company Hellenic Mediterranean Lines took over the ship, renamed it Lydia and used it in the Mediterranean Sea with the subsidiary Compania Naviera del Atlantico. On December 30, 1966, the Lydia was decommissioned in Piraeus and offered for sale.

The Societe d'Economie Mixte d'Etudes et d'Amenagement des Pyrenees Orientales (SEMETA) acquired the ship in 1967 and had it converted in Marseille for use as a non-propulsion tourist and casino ship. On June 10, 1967, the Lydia was pulled to the beach of Barcarès through a specially dug channel and set at the position 42 ° 49 '39 "N; 003 ° 2' 28" E, where it is in the middle of an amusement park as a tourist attraction with a museum, Serves restaurant, disco and casino. In 1974 a Japanese company took over the ship.

additional

In the feature film Der Greifer several scenes take place on the ship. The main character, played by Jean-Paul Belmondo , uncovered a mafia group in the ship's casino.
