Dennis Green (football coach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dennis Earl "Denny" Green (born February 17, 1949 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania , † July 22, 2016 in San Diego , California ) was an American American football coach. He last coached the Sacramento Mountain Lions in the newly formed United Football League . He became known for his work in the National Football League (NFL), as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals .

Career

In 1981, Northwestern University hired Dennis Green as head coach. Before that he was primarily a trainer for the offensive lines of various college teams. He headed the Northwestern Wildcats for four years before he made it into the National Football League for the first time. The San Francisco 49ers signed the then 37-year-old as a trainer for the running backs . After just two years, he turned his back on the NFL and coached the college football team at Stanford University .

He made the final leap into the NFL in 1992 when he took over the management of the Minnesota Vikings . These were in a rather unsuccessful time with some scandals (such as the Herschel Walker Trade ). With Green, however, came a major turnaround. In his ten years with the Vikings, they reached the play-offs eight times , but could not move into the Super Bowl once . He left the team after a poor 2001 season .

After two seasons as an analyst with ESPN , he signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2004 . After two extremely successful years, the team moved to the newly built University of Phoenix Stadium , with Matt Leinart and Edgerrin James as reinforcements . The team could not meet the high expectations. After losing to the Chicago Bears in 2006 , Green had a fit of anger at the press conference in which he sarcastically described the Bears as "just the team we expected, but we let them off the hook, and if you want to crown the Bears then do." it damn it "( The Bears are who we thought they were, but we let them off the hook, so if you want to crown them, then crown their a ** ). This tirade achieved such cult status that Green used it in a commercial and had the quotes trademarked. On January 1, 2007, Green was fired; his contract would have expired in 2008.

From March 2009 he coached teams in the United Football League , most recently the Sacramento Mountain Lions from California .

Green died of a heart attack on July 21, 2016. He leaves behind his wife and four children.
