Mike Smith (* 13 June 1959 in Chicago , Illinois ) Nickname : Smitty is a US American football trainer. He was most recently the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL).

Youth / family

Mike Smith was born in Chicago, but grew up in Daytona Beach , Florida , where he attended high school and played American football. As a football player, he was elected to the Florida state selection. After graduating from school, he studied from 1977 to 1981 at East Tennessee State University and played college football for their ETSU Buccaneers as a linebacker in defense .

Player career

After completing his studies, Mike Smith moved to Canada and was there for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He only played there in 1982 and then ended his playing career.

Coaching career

Assistant coach

After his playing career, Mike Smith became an assistant coach at San Diego State University . He was responsible for training the linebackers at the San Diego State Aztecs . In 1986 he coached the defensive line at Morehead State University for a year . He then moved to Tennessee Technological University . He held various functions with the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles until 1998 .

In 1999, Smith finally switched to the professional field. He became Brian Billick's assistant at the Baltimore Ravens . He already worked with Billick at San Diego State University. Smith was in charge of the Ravens defensive line . The team managed to win twelve of their 16th games in 2000. With a 16-3 win over the Oakland Raiders , the Ravens managed to win the AFC Championship Game . In the subsequent Super Bowl XXXV , the New York Giants could then be defeated 34: 7.

Smith joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003 . There he assisted Jack del Rio , with whom he had already worked in Baltimore at the Ravens, in the position of defensive coordinator .

Head coach

In 2008, Smith finally took over the post of Head Coach for the Atlanta Falcons . Smith managed to form a top team around quarterback Matt Ryan , running back Michael Turner and wide receiver Roddy White . The Georgia team had lost eleven of 16 games last year. Smith was able to reverse this trend and won eleven games in the regular season . This allowed the Falcons to move into the play-offs . However, the team failed in the wild card play-off round with 30:24 at the Arizona Cardinals . Mike Smith was named NFL Coach of the Year after the season . He was able to move into the play-offs three times with the team from Atlanta until the 2012 season . In 2010 and 2011 they did not manage to move into the NFC Championship Game , but after the 2010 season he was again elected NFL Coach of the Year.
