Henry Michael "Mick" Tingelhoff (born May 22, 1940 in Lexington , Nebraska ) is a former American American football player. He played from 1962 to 1978 in the National Football League (NFL) on the position of the center for the Minnesota Vikings . He has been a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 2015 . For many experts, Tingelhoff is considered the best center of its era.

Football career

After Mick Tingelhoff was drafted in 1962 by no team from the NFL and AFL , he came to the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent and signed a contract for $ 11,000 as a linebacker . In the training camp, the then head coach Norm Van Brocklin dismissed the starting center and instead put Tingelhoff on the position. From then on, he did not miss a single game during his 17 seasons as a starting center. When he resigned after the 1978 season, he had 240 starts in a row behind teammate Jim Marshall (270 games as a starter), the second longest series of starts in NFL history. Tingelhoff played in the Vikings 'most successful period under Bud Grant and was one of 11 players who played in all four of the Vikings' four Super Bowl appearances ( IV , VIII , IX , XI ) in the 1970s . As center, Mick Tingelhoff had the task of organizing pass protection for the quarterback Fran Tarkenton, known as the scrambler ( leaving the pocket ) . A task that he mastered excellently thanks to his teammates Grady Alderman , Milt Sunde , Ron Yary and Ed White and his ability to read the opposing defense correctly. With Joe Schmidt , Ray Nitschke and Dick Butkus , he sometimes had to deal with opponents who are now all members of the Hall of Fame.

Honors

1980 Tingelhoff was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame . His name was inducted into the Minnesota Vikings ' Ring of Honor in 2001. With 240 consecutive starts and six consecutive Pro Bowl appearances, he was expected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame quickly. However, since he did not win a Super Bowl, he was nominated from the Senior Committee 37 years after his resignation and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015 .
