Lexington is a city in Dawson County with 10,251 inhabitants (as of 2006) in the south of the US state Nebraska and is also the administrative seat ( county seat ).
Lexington has had the city's name since 1889 . Before that, the village was called Plum Creek since 1866 .

Lexington is on the Platte River , southeast of the city of North Platte . The US Highway 30 runs through Lexington. During the 1860s, Lexington was a stopover on the Pony Express .

What is unusual for Nebraska is that nearly 50% of the population is of Mexican descent. This is the result of the government-sponsored construction of a meat packaging factory by IBP Inc.

Social history
The population of Lexington was hit hard by the farm crisis of the 1980s, which resulted in government tax breaks and other incentives for industrial establishments to be established. The meat packaging factory started production in 1992, but the majority of the employees were immigrants from Mexico and Central America, which led to severe social tensions. Housing prices, the birth rate and also the crime rate shot up and the city had to spend enormous amounts of money to adapt the infrastructure to the growing population.
