Chinese Man is a French hip-hop trio with borrowings from various musical genres from Marseille .

Band history

The three musicians Zé Mateo, Sly and High Ku began their careers in 2004 by founding their own vinyl label. They got the name Chinese Man from a saying from the film Ocean's Eleven , which they have already sampled and used for their music. Samples from various sources and the mixing of different musical styles from all over the world are also the trademark of the trio. Not much is known about their background except that they are originally from Aix-en-Provence and are based in Marseille .

They made their first release in 2005 with the EP The Pandi Groove, limited to 500 copies . It was followed in the following year by The Indi Groove and The Bunni Groove in double editions. The third EP also included I've Got That Tune . Its use in a Mercedes-Benz commercial made the band famous beyond the country's borders. This was followed in 2007 by the first album The Groove Sessions Volume 1 with recordings from the EPs and the bonus track Chinese Man , of which they sold over 10,000 copies. The following year, Sly, the group's beatmaker, released an instrumental album entitled Small City Music and the fourth joint EP, Hong Kong Dragon Speaking , was released.

The breakthrough came in 2009 with Volume 2 of the Groove Sessions . The album brought her to the French charts for the first time at number 75. The release was followed by her first major tour of France. Two years later the album Racing with the Sun was released (the title comes from a sample of the song by Ella Jenkins ). In April they made it to number 20 on the French charts. A remix version of the album also hit the charts the following year. Chinese Man's first live album , recorded at La Cigale in Paris, was released in 2013.

The next EP Once Upon a Time followed in 2014 and shortly afterwards The Groove Sessions Vol. 3 . The album was officially declared a label release and also contained several tracks by other label members. This not only brought them back close to the top 20 in France, but also made it into the charts for the first time in Wallonia, the French-speaking part of Belgium. Another EP with the title Sho-Bro and the album The Journey followed in 2015 . They then worked with the South African MC Boitumelo Molecane alias Tumi , who had already been a guest at Once Upon a Time . Both publications brought them further chart positions.

The sixth studio album Shikantaza was released on February 3, 2017. The title is a term from Zen Buddhism and is associated with sitting meditation. A number of guest musicians worked on the album, including the US rappers Dillon Cooper and RA the Rugged Man . In addition to the French charts, where the album reached number 18, it also entered the Belgian and, for the first time, the Swiss charts .
