Virginio Arias

Virginio Arias Cruz (born December 8, 1855 in Ranquil , † January 17, 1941 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean sculptor .

Arías began his training as a sculptor at the age of twelve in Concepción with Tomás Chávez . From 1874 he was a student of Nicanor Plaza at the Academía de Bellas Artes . He sent him to Paris in 1875, where he continued his training with François Jouffroy , Alexandre Falguière and Jean-Paul Laurens and became a friend of Auguste Rodin .

In 1890 he returned to Chile. In 1895 the Chilean government sent him again to France to gain experience in organizing an art school. In 1900 he was appointed director of the Escuela de Bellas Artes , which he directed until 1911. He then lived again in Europe until he finally settled in Chile in the 1930s. From 1938 he was an honorary member of the Sociedad de Bellas Artes de Chile .

Arías' works can be found in the collections of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Museo Histórico Nacional , as well as in public places, including in La Serena ( La Primavera ), Iquique ( Monumento a Arturo Prat ), Valparaíso (facade of the Cuerpo building de Bomberos ) and in Santiago (Cemetario Católico: El Labriego , Cemetario General: Monumento Pro Patria , Plaza Baquedano: Monumento al General Baquedano ).
