Sara Slott Petersen (born April 9, 1987 in Nykøbing Falster , Denmark ) is a Danish athlete who specializes in the 400 meter hurdles . In 2016 she became the first Danish woman ever to become European champion and won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in the same year, behind Dalilah Muhammad .

Career

She started athletics at the age of 13 and represented her country three years later at the 2003 World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke , Canada . There she achieved 4th place. The following year, she already competed at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Grosseto , where she was eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2005 she again reached 4th place at the Junior European Championships in Kaunas . The following year, she returned to the Junior World Championships and there, as tenth of the semifinals, narrowly missed the entry into the finals, but achieved a new Danish junior record with 57.65 s.

In 2009 she competed for the first time in the senior class. At the beginning of the season she made it to the semi-finals at the European Indoor Championships in Turin . In spring she won a medal for the first time at the Universiade in Belgrade , where she came in 3rd place. At the U23 European Championships she managed to reach the final again, in which she finished sixth. Due to the successful season, Petersen was also able to qualify for the World Championships in Berlin , where she was eliminated in the semi-finals.

The following years were turbulent and she could not record any major successes, with the exception of 4th place at the Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen . In 2013 she had her first child and did not compete for the entire season. After she was disqualified at the European Championships in 2014 , she made her international breakthrough in the following year. While she was not able to record any notable successes in the 2015 indoor season, she achieved a small sensation at the World Championships in Beijing after she had achieved 4th place overall in the final, only 18 hundredths of a second away from another medal.

In June 2016 Sara Petersen was crowned European champion , noting the absence of world champion Zuzana Hejnová and defending champion Eilidh Child . However, she improved over the entire season and achieved the silver medal at the Olympic Games with a sensational time of 53.55 s, behind the American Dalilah Muhammad . With this time, she is in the all-time best list on rank 35 (as of December 2016).

At the European Indoor Championships 2017 in Belgrade , Petersen made it to the semifinals over 400 meters. In the open air season she qualified for the World Championships in London , but was unable to build on her two very successful previous seasons throughout the season. In London she was eliminated in the semifinals with 55.45 s .

Petersen studied mathematics in Aarhus until 2007 and also worked at an elementary school. In 2008 she began studying nutrition and health. So far she has been 20 times Danish outdoor champion and 13 times indoors in various sprint disciplines and in hurdles.

In 2008 she received the Golden Puma as the best athlete in Denmark and in 2016 she was recognized by the Danish Ministry of Culture for her sporting achievements this year. The prize is endowed with 100,000 DKK.
