High Islamic Council of the Republic of Tunisia
The High Islamic Council of the Republic of Tunisia ( French Conseil supérieur islamique de la République tunisienne ; abbreviation CSI for short ; Arabic المجلس الإسلامي الأعلى, DMG al-Maǧlis al-Islami al-A'la ) is the highest religious authority in consultative State whose religion under Article 1 of its Constitution of Islam is. Its seat is in the Tunisian capital Tunis . It was founded in 1989 under Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali . According to the Tunisian government, he is in particular responsible for examining all matters submitted to him by the government and relating to the application of Article 1 of the Constitution and to social and religious ( Fiqh ) issues.
The President of the Council was Rachid Sabbagh, who also served as the Tunisian Defense Minister . A later president was Abdallah Loussaïef. According to an assessment by Mohamed Talbi , the council “ only serves for the ' usage extérieur ', as a showcase to a certain extent ”. The council was called on questions about the teaching content of the theological Zitouna University as well as questions about religious instruction in schools and in imam training. The politician Ali Chebbi, Minister for Religious Affairs from 1992 to 1999 , was one of its previous chairmen. Among the signatories of the Amman Message ( Amman Message ), for example, include not only Ali Chebbi, the council members Shaykh Mohieddine Gadi and Shaykh Al-Tayyib Salama, both members of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy .
